Corpus luteum is a term used in reproductive physiology and gynecology to describe a temporary endocrine gland that develops in the ovary after the release of an egg during ovulation. The term "corpus luteum" is derived from Latin, with "corpus" meaning body and "luteum" meaning yellow, referring to the yellow appearance of the gland.
The corpus luteum plays a crucial role in the menstrual and reproductive cycle of females. After the release of an egg, the empty follicle in the ovary undergoes structural and biochemical changes, forming the corpus luteum. It mainly produces two hormones: progesterone and a small amount of estrogen. These hormones have significant responsibilities in maintaining and preparing the uterus for potential pregnancy.
If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum gradually regresses, causing a decline in progesterone and estrogen levels. This leads to the shedding of the uterine lining, resulting in menstruation. However, if fertilization occurs, the developing embryo signals the continuation of the corpus luteum, supporting the maintenance of the uterine lining for a healthy pregnancy until the placenta takes over hormone production.
The lifespan of the corpus luteum varies, typically lasting around 10 to 16 days. If pregnancy occurs, the corpus luteum will remain functional for a longer period, providing hormonal support until the placenta develops.
