The external jugular vein is a major blood vessel located in the neck that is responsible for draining deoxygenated blood from various parts of the head and neck region. It is one of the two jugular veins, the other being the internal jugular vein, and is easily visible on the surface of the neck.
The external jugular vein begins at the angle of the mandible (jawbone) and travels downwards in a superficial position, running parallel to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Along its course, it receives blood from smaller veins, including those from the scalp, face, and superficial neck muscles. It ultimately drains into the subclavian vein, which is a major vein in the upper chest region.
This vein plays a crucial role in the circulatory system by helping to remove waste products and deoxygenated blood from the head and neck and bringing them back to the heart and lungs for reoxygenation.
