Etymology of MOUNT RANIER
The word "Mount Rainier" is derived from the name given to it by the indigenous people of the region, the Lower Chinook tribe. In their language, the mountain was called "Tacoma" or "Tahoma", which roughly translates to "mother of waters" or "snowy peak". When British explorer George Vancouver encountered the mountain in 1792, he named it after his friend and British naval officer, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. However, the official name of the mountain was changed back to the original indigenous name, Mount Tahoma, in 1890. It was later renamed Mount Rainier in 1899 to honor Vancouver's initial naming. Today, both names, Mount Rainier and Mount Tahoma, are recognized and used.
