OCSP stands for Online Certificate Status Protocol. It is a network protocol used for checking the validity and status of digital certificates in a public key infrastructure (PKI) system. OCSP allows clients, such as web browsers and other applications, to verify if a given certificate has been revoked or is still valid before connecting to a website.
When a client attempts to connect to a server over a secured connection, the server's digital certificate is presented to the client. The client can then send an OCSP request to the certificate authority (CA) responsible for issuing that certificate. The CA's OCSP responder responds to the request with an OCSP response that contains information about the certificate's status. The response indicates whether the certificate is currently valid, has been revoked, or has expired.
The OCSP protocol provides a real-time response, allowing for immediate checking of the certificate's status. This is in contrast to certificate revocation lists (CRLs), which are static lists published periodically and can be time-consuming to download and process.
OCSP enhances the security of PKI systems by providing a mechanism to quickly and efficiently verify the status of digital certificates. It helps prevent the use of compromised or revoked certificates, strengthening the trust and integrity of secure connections.
