The primary organ of smell is the olfactory epithelium situated in the upper nasal cavity and supported by the nasal conchae. This delicate tissue is composed of olfactory receptor cells, basal cells, and supporting cells.
When airborne molecules carrying distinct odorous particles interact with the functions of the olfactory epithelium, sensory information is transmitted to the brain for interpretation, resulting in what is commonly recognized as smell. The process begins when odor molecules bind to the olfactory receptor cells, initiating a biochemical reaction that generates electrical signals. These signals travel along the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb, where the information is then further transferred to other brain structures such as the olfactory cortex.
The organ of smell is crucial not only for the detection of scents but also for triggering memories, emotions, and even survival instincts.
