Perinephritis is a medical term that refers to the inflammation of the tissues surrounding the kidneys. These tissues include the perirenal fat, renal fascia, and the outer layer of the kidney itself. Perinephritis usually occurs as a result of a bacterial infection that has spread from the urinary tract, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or kidney infection. However, it can also occur as a complication of other conditions, such as kidney stones or trauma to the kidneys.
The inflammation and infection in perinephritis can cause symptoms such as flank pain (pain on the side of the body between the ribs and hip), fever, chills, and general discomfort. Additionally, affected individuals may experience fatigue, frequent urination, painful urination, and blood in the urine.
Diagnosis of perinephritis often involves a physical examination, medical history review, and various diagnostic tests, including blood tests, urine tests, and imaging studies such as ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scans. Treatment typically involves administering antibiotics to combat the bacterial infection, along with pain medications and fluids to relieve symptoms and prevent dehydration.
If left untreated, perinephritis can lead to serious complications, such as the formation of an abscess or sepsis, which is a life-threatening systemic infection. Therefore, prompt medical attention and treatment are crucial to prevent further complications and promote recovery.
