Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine, also known as Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna Romanova, was a prominent figure in both Russian Imperial and German royalty. Born on November 1, 1864, in Hesse, Germany, she was the daughter of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom.
Elisabeth was known for her deep religiosity, compassion, and philanthropy. She married Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia in 1884, becoming a member of the Russian imperial family. However, her life drastically changed after her husband's assassination in 1905. Rather than seeking revenge, Princess Elisabeth decided to devote herself to religious service and charitable work.
She founded the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy, a religious community dedicated to serving the poor and needy in Moscow. Princess Elisabeth selflessly supported various charitable causes, including orphanages, hospitals, and schools. Her commitment to helping others, regardless of their social standing, made her widely revered.
During the Russian Revolution in 1917, Princess Elisabeth and other members of the Romanov family were arrested and imprisoned. In July 1918, she was tragically executed by the Bolsheviks in Alapayevsk along with several other relatives. Princess Elisabeth was later canonized as a martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church.
