Reifenstein syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that is classified as a type of androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS). This syndrome is caused by mutations in the androgen receptor gene, leading to a reduced or almost complete lack of response to male sex hormones, such as testosterone. As a result, affected individuals may have both male and female reproductive structures, typically having underdeveloped male genitalia, such as micropenis or hypospadias. In some cases, there can also be a lack of descent of the testes into the scrotum, resulting in undescended testicles.
